Overview
Higher Certificate in Product and Craft Design – Craft Design, NQF 5
We offer a Higher Certificate in Product and Craft Design with a focus on Craft Design, NQF 5. The purpose of the qualification is to lay a foundation in the broad principles and practices of design. The programme introduces learners to creative and visual thinking, design thinking and the design process, visual communication methods, professional practice, and the analysis and critique of design solutions. It offers an integrated combination of conceptual and applied skills and prepares learners to become flexible, problem solving thinkers beyond the boundaries of a single design discipline. This Higher Certificate includes an elective in Design Thinking with a focus on Craft Design in the second semester.
The elective equips learners with the fundamental toolkit to solve basic design problems and develop creative solutions within the field of Craft Design. From concept to creation, students are introduced to principles of design, drawing, material exploration, and craft based making processes. They engage with hand made and low volume production methods, exploring material sensitivity, technical skill, and conceptual development. Students apply analytical, synthetic, and evaluative approaches in the development of crafted artefacts, participate in reflective self evaluation, and demonstrate their contributions within group design projects. Professional and ethical conduct is emphasised throughout. Students also acquire the academic reading and writing skills required for further study and graduate with a standalone NQF Level 5 qualification.
Design Curriculum Overview
Throughout the programme, students develop essential skills to address craft design challenges by creating artefacts that reflect both conceptual depth and technical competence. They apply fundamental design knowledge, engage in reflective practice, contribute meaningfully to collaborative projects, and operate within professional and ethical standards while communicating their ideas through clear visual and material outputs.
