- Architecture at the Edge of the Map
This talk will explore the process of designing within remote, sensitive and extraordinary environments — from responding to the realities of a site to finding practical ways to make ambitious architectural ideas possible. Anje Serfontein will discuss the transition from architectural education into practice, and the experiences, opportunities and challenges involved in establishing a meaningful design position.
- Architecture and Urbanism: Shaping Heritage, Social Justice and Democratic City-Making
Architecture and urbanism shape not only physical environments but also how societies remember, represent and negotiate contested histories. Using Rio de Janeiro’s former Central Police Palace as a case study, this lecture considers architecture’s role in heritage, social justice and collective memory, exploring how interventions in historically significant sites can support participation, education, public dialogue and more inclusive urban futures.
- There is no Spoon
This talk will interrogate the intersection between architecture, film, design and visual storytelling. Nhlakanipho Mashinini will consider how architectural thinking can extend beyond the conventional building and into visual media, using space, memory, culture and narrative as tools for communicating ideas.
